Munchie Monday: How to Make CBD Gummies

Today's Munchie Monday is covering how to make CBD Gummies at home!

I was so excited to try a CBD gummy recipe for today's blog post!

My attitude towards cooking at home with CBD is if you can read, and have basic cooking knowledge then you can cook with CBD at home.

When I embarked on my journey to make CBD gummies at home, I realized this was not that simple!

Life has a fun, exciting way of throwing you off course, just when you think you have everything down pat!

You would not believe the trial tests I've had over the past few weeks, while trying to find the perfect CBD Gummy Recipe for you!

But I finally figured it out, and I share exactly how to do it step by step below.

What Makes a Good CBD Gummy?

how to make CBD gummies at home that are tasty!

The possibilities of CBD gummies at home definitely lean towards infinite combinations!

What makes a CBD gummy that is good and effective?

The number one factor in a good CBD Gummy is to start with high quality material, and for this recipe I used a high quality CBD tincture.

I know some people make them from powder CBD isolate, and you can definitely do that if you believe that is the best result for you.

I'm here to tell you that any chef, any wellness instructor, any nutritionist is going to tell you that good food that tastes delicious and fuels your body starts with fresh high quality ingredients.

CBD edibles are no different, you are sure to get more effective results when you choose a high quality hemp oil.

I prefer full spectrum products, as they are what works best for me.

However, if you are drug tested, you should stick to broad spectrum products or CBD isolate.

Several Recipes I ran across online called for powder CBD isolate, and if that's what you choose to use, then take a moment to heed this warning.

Most powder isolates need to be added to a carrier oil prior to being added to your gummy mixture, be very careful not to overheat this isolate, because it can destroy the CBD.

How to Calculate the Dosage in Your CBD Gummies

How to find the dosage for your homemade CBD gummies

When working with CBD powder isolate the mg dosage is calculated differently. Seeing as CBD isolate is 99% pure, 0.1 grams of CBD isolate is the equivalent to approximately 100mg of CBD.

However, by using a CBD tincture you can quickly and easily determine the strength of each gummy by using the 1mL dropper that's often marked for precise dosing.

Questions about CBD dosing are still the number one topic we educate customers on.

Estimating your final dosage of CBD gummies at home can vary widely because CBD oil comes in different concentrations and gummy molds vary in size & shape.

Let's use an example recipe that calls for 1mL of CBD oil.

1mL of a 500 mg CBD oil will provide 16.6 mg of CBD.

Divide the CBD oil by your gummy mold.

So if your mold yields 50 gummies, you would divide the 16.6 mg by 50 to get .33mg per gummy.

Total miligrams of CBD used divided by the final number of gummies = amount of CBD per gummy.

You could also do the following calculation if you have a set milligram content you'd like. So if you'd like to make CBD gummies with 25mg each, and you have a mold of 25.

So that means you'd multiple 25mg times 25 gummies and you'd get 625mg of CBD, which is the total amount you'd need to make 25 gummies that each have 25mg of CBD in them.

Meaning if you're using a 1,000mg tincture, each 1mL contains 33.3mg (strength divided by bottle size - 1,000mg/30mL = 33.3mg) of CBD. Then if you divide 625mg by 33.3mg you'd need about 19mL of your 1,000mg tincture to meet your desired strength of 25mg of CBD per gummy.

If you're using a low strength or higher strength tincture, make sure you adjust the formula above.

For this recipe, I used the Wellicy 1,000 mg natural Hemp Oil tincture.

1mL of 1,000mg Wellicy has 33.33 mg of CBD.

I used 6mL of this full spectrum CBD oil so 33.33 mg multiplied by 6 = 199.98 mg of CBD in my gummie mixture.

The mold I used made about 20 gummies.

199.98/20 = 9.99mg of CBD per gummy.

10 mg of CBD per gummy is the perfect dose for me to keep on hand, it can easily be doubled if my pain or anxiety worsens.

For some people 10mg of CBD per gummy maybe to much, if so cut your gummy in half or use a less concentrated CBD oil.

The Recipe

  • CBD Oil (Again I used Wellicy's Full Spectrum 1,000mg Hemp Oil Tincture)
  • Grass-fed collagen Gelatine
  • Tart Cherry Juice
  • Raw Honey
  • Gummy molds

Step 1: Heat the Juice in a saucepan to a low simmer

Step 2: Whisk in the gelatin and the honey, stirring for about a minute until the ingredients are combined

Step 3: Turn off the heat & add your CBD oil

Step 4: Pour the mixture into your mold, dividing it evenly, and place in refrigerator to set

Step 5: Wait at least 30 minutes to one hour before removing the gummies from the mold. Store into the refrigerator for up to 10 days.

Notes and Substitutions

I used a gelatin that I eat on a regular basis. If you prefer Vegan gelatin, there are definitely options for you such as Vegan Jel or Agar-Agar.

Make this recipe your own and use whatever you prefer.

As long as you have the basic ingredients of CBD oil, Gelatin (to set your mixture) juice & sweetener, the combinations are endless.

I prefer tart cherry juice, because I deal with chronic inflammation I find it is very important to regularly work super foods into my diet.

This is a simple way to add one, you can use whatever juice you prefer.

You could use pommegrante juice, pineapple juice, or even fruit punch.

In the past I've used dried berries or tea to make my own juice, I've even juiced fresh fruits for gummies at home.

I'd like to make a small note about sweeteners.

To me, there is nothing quite as sweet and tasty as local raw honey. You do not have to use honey.

You could use sugar to sweeten, allulose, monkfruit extract, or even xylitol.

Take note that allulose & monkfruit extract are many times sweeter than sugar.

If you choose to use this to sweeten your gummies start with only 1/8 of a teaspoon.

Otherwise, you may end up with a sugary, grity mess like I did, when I did not measure my monkfruit extract correctly.

If you choose to use xylitol, make sure to be careful if you have pup or kitten in the house.

Xylitol is toxic to dogs, cats, and birds.

Honestly, that's kind of why I avoid it, plus it can be hard to find in smaller grocery stores, so I do recommend sticking with sugar or honey.

These gummies set best in a shallow, flexible mold.

You don't have to stick with traditional gummie bear molds, just make sure that the size & shape are uniform.

I prefer soft silicone molds, because they can take the heat and cold without cracking and breaking.

If the gummies in your mold are not the same size and shape, your dosage of CBD can vary greatly.

That is why some people choose to measure out the pippette of CBD into each individual mold as opposed to in the gummy mixture.

If you prefer a more concentrated dose of CBD in your gummies, I recommend dosing the pippette from your tincture directly in each mold.

I have used a larger mold and dosed Bluebird Botanicals Hemp Classic 6x has 25mg of full spectrum CBD per .5 ml.

With a larger mold, you can simply dose .5ml into each gummy mold and then add the juice & gelatin mixture.

That means that each gummy I dosed with Bluebird Botanicals has 25 mg of CBD per gummy.

If your mold is too deep or ornate, you may have a harder time removing the gummies from the mold.

If they are hard, sticky, and ripping, you may have left the mold in the refrigerator too long.

Let your mold sit out on the counter for a little while before trying to remove the gummies if this is your problem.

If your gummies are runny and not setting, you may not have bloomed your gelatin long enough or you may have not added enough gelatin.

Try blooming more gelatin according to package directions, and adding it to your juice mixture over a low heat for a few minutes before pouring it back in the molds and refrigerator.

If your gummies are still sticking to your molds at room temperature, consider running a paring knife around the outside of your mold.
