How to Properly Dose with Delta-8
Because of the fact that it’s so new to the market, coupled with its distinctive psychoactive effects, more users are contacting us wondering how to dose it properly.
It’s good to be cautious when trying something new, especially when it’s something that does have the ability to get you high.
We’ll be talking all about dosing when it comes to delta-8 THC, whether you’re looking to pop a sugary delta-8 infused gummy into your mouth or vape/smoke delta-8 flower or use any other type of delivery method that contains a concentrated version of this fascinating cannabinoid.
As you’ll see, dosing delta-8 is quite similar to dosing CBD, but there are some clear differences that do require that you pay careful attention to what you’re doing regardless of the form in which you buy it.
Why is Dosing with Delta-8 Different from Dosing with CBD?
Better question though would be:
“Why is it so important to follow specific dosing instructions with delta-8 compared to CBD?”
Well, cannabidiol and delta-8 are two different compounds, and thus they affect the body differently.
Both of these compounds are cannabinoids, which means that they are used by the body through the endocannabinoid system, which enables a process in which cannabinoids bind with specific cannabinoid receptors in the body to produce unique effects.
Delta-8 and cannabidiol share some properties, including ones that may impact mood and pain levels, but they do so through different mechanisms via the endocannabinoid system, and so they are used in slightly different ways.
It’s milder than delta-9 THC, which is the dominant cannabinoid in marijuana, but at the end of the day, delta-8 is a compound that will get you high, and for this reason, how you dose it requires more careful consideration as these intoxicating effects can certainly alter the way in which you are able to carry out certain tasks.
When Do the Effects of Delta-8 Peak, and How Long They Can Last?
Before we get into the specifics of dosing, we need to break down the timing when it comes to using delta-8.
Just like CBD, delta-8’s onset time and length during which the effects can be felt largely depends on the delivery method.
But the timing is different when one compares delta-8 to CBD.
This is due to the way in which each absorbs differently into the body.
First, let’s talk about inhalable methods like vapes and flower.
Inhaling the compound can allow a peak to occur within a couple to twenty minutes, depending on the purity, strength, and dosage size.
The effects can last for one to five hours depending on these same factors.
The effects can last for 5 to 12 hours.
With edibles, you can expect a peak anywhere from 1 to 4 hours after consumption, compared to a peak of 45 minutes to 2 hours with CBD.
Again, the effects can last for 5 to 12 hours.
When applying topicals of any kind/type, you may notice fast effects within minutes, and these effects can last for up to 5 or 6 hours, generally speaking.
Factors That Determine How Potently You’ll Feel Delta-8
Like we said, delta-8 is intoxicating while CBD is not.
Even with high doses of cannabidiol, the user will not feel high or altered in any way, but that isn’t the case with delta-8 THC.
Therefore, it’s important to have an idea of how potently you’ll feel these psychoactive effects.
Here are the factors that play a role in how potently you’ll feel your dose, besides the dosage amount itself.
Factor #1: Strength/Potency Level
The strength of the formula plays a huge role in how potent your delta-8 experience feels.
Like CBD products, delta-8 products come in all different milligram strengths based on how much delta-8 extract is added to the formula.
This means that the same dose can give you quite different levels of potency depending on the product’s strength.
Be mindful of this when shopping for delta-8 and know that it’s recommended that users begin with a relatively low strength until they have a full idea of how delta-8 feels in their body.
Factor #2: Delivery Method
The delivery method you choose doesn’t just affect the onset time and duration of effects, but how potent those effects are as well.
When we inhale delta-8, we can feel very strong effects due to how competently the compound absorbs through the tissue of the lungs.
With tinctures, it tends to be a bit less potent.
Edibles are unique, because of how they metabolize.
Many of us are used to CBD edibles producing subtler effects compared to, say, CBD vapes.
But this isn’t the case with delta-8 edibles.
The experience produced when ingesting delta-8 is different than it is when we inhale it or take it as a tincture, because ingesting it forces the body to produce specific metabolites to process it in the liver, which means that you can feel very potent effects but in a different manner.
Many find that the effects when ingested are felt more throughout the body than in the cerebral sense, although mood effects can be present.
Finally, delta-8 topicals are unlikely to produce any kind of high, because the cannabinoid stays localized to the area of the body onto which it was applied, rather than crossing the blood brain barrier.
This is why delta-8 topical solutions are generally used for pain relief and relief from skin issues.
Factor #3: Tolerance to Delta-9 THC
Because delta-8 and delta-9 THC share so much in common, we’re finding that those who have a high tolerance to the latter typically have a higher tolerance to the former as well.
Delta-8 and delta-9 behave similarly in the body, but delta 8 offers a more milder experience.
Therefore, keep this in mind when dosing.
Factors That Don’t Seem to Make a Difference
There are some factors that don’t seem to make much of an actual impact, with the most notable one being body weight.
We’ve heard that when dosing CBD, one must take into account their body weight as those who weigh more likely require a higher dose.
This doesn’t seem to be the case with delta-8.
Other factors that don’t seem to make a difference are your age and your tolerance to CBD.
How to Dose Delta-8?
Now, we can talk about dosing, as all of the factors above play a role.
How much you should take largely depends on the delivery method you’ve chosen, and this is because each delivery method allows the cannabinoid to absorb into the body in a different way, which can ultimately alter how potently you feel the delta-8 THC.
What we are referring to is bottled e-liquid that is manually poured into a cartridge or tank.
Delta-8 vape oils come in various bottle sizes and strengths, but the general dosing guidelines are the same.
Typically, a single milliliter of e-liquid provides you with 100 puffs.
Also, most vape oil bottles contain 30 milliliters of e-juice, which is 3,000 puffs, give or take.
To determine the dose per puff, you need to divide the number of milligrams by the number of puffs in the bottle.
Generally, one to three puffs are counted as a standard dose, but remember that the strength determines how potent that dose is.
We recommend starting with one puff and waiting 20 minutes before deciding whether or not another one is needed.
Disposable vapes are all-in-one vaping systems that attach a pre-filled cart to a pre-charged battery.
While they are different structurally from devices that take vape oil, the dosing rules are the same.
One to three puffs is a standard dose, and the milligram strength can vary.
Again, to determine the number of milligrams in a single puff, multiply the number of milliliters by 100.
Then, divide the number of milligrams by the number of milliliters. But keep in mind this can vary from vape to vape as well as person to person depending on your vaping style.
Vape carts are pre-filled cartridges that attach to a vape pen device.
Once again, all vaping products follow the same dosing laws.
So, use the same formula above based on the number of milliliters in the cartridge.
This is the raw hemp flower buds infused with delta-8 extract, and it’s either smoked or vaporized.
Once again, because you’re inhaling the delta-8, one to three puffs is generally considered a standard dose.
Because the other compounds in hemp are present in this type of product, the potency of each dose can vary a lot, as each compound interacts with delta-8 in a specific manner.
We do recommend taking one puff and waiting to see how it affects you.
Delta-8 tinctures come in many milligram strengths, and almost always arrive in a 30ml dropper bottle.
They are held under the tongue which allows for a unique means for the compound to absorb into the bodily system.
A typical dose ranges from 10mg to 40mg, largely depending on your tolerance and how potent you want the effects to be.
Beginners are advised to start with 10mg and work their way up as tolerated and desired.
The good thing about tinctures is that they make dosing easy.
A single dropper’s worth is one milliliter, which is a standard dose.
To determine how many milligrams you are getting per dose, simply divide the number of milligrams in the formula by the number of milliliters.
Like tinctures, a standard dose of edibles is 10mg to 40mg.
Because each piece of an edible contains the same amount of milligrams, it’s easy to dose out the right amount.
If you choose a higher-strength option as a beginner, you may find that half a piece is the way to go starting out.
Virtually every edible label tells you how many milligrams are in each piece, but if this information isn’t available, divide the total number of milligrams in the package by the number of pieces.
With topicals, you can be a bit more lenient with your dosing, because as we said, this delivery method should not produce intoxicating effects.
The goal with topicals is not to measure out a precise amount, but to make sure that you use enough to cover the affected area so that it can be as effective as possible.
Can You Take Multiple Doses of Delta-8 in One Day?
After specifics about dosing amounts, the next question we typically get asked is whether or not it’s okay to have more than one dose in a day.
Overall, the answer is yes, if your body can tolerate it.
How to Avoid Taking Too High a Dose
It’s not unusual for someone to end up taking too high of a dose in the beginning because they’re excited to discover the effects of delta-8.
But you may want to avoid this, because too high of a dose can make you feel intoxicated in a way that is either unpleasant or stops you from doing necessary tasks.
This is why we urge you to start slowly and work up your tolerance, rather than going for the highest dose or milligram strength right off the bat.
Proper Dosing Really is Key to a Successful Delta-8 Experience
Delta-8 THC is a powerful cannabinoid that, while being milder than delta-9, can induce intoxicating effects.
For this reason, you need to be mindful of your dosing, even more so than when you take CBD.
Luckily, there are clear dosing guidelines that can ensure that you have the best experience possible. But regardless when in doubt, start low and go slow! You can always take more but you can never take less once consumed.
When choosing your ideal daily dose, also consider the delivery method and strength, as well as your unique tolerance.
