Few things are as classically iconic as cannabis brownies, did we just take you through a trip down memory lane?
Due to explosion of the CBD industry, CBD hemp brownies are becoming more and more popular!
But you may be wondering, how do you make a good tasting CBD hemp brownie? or what makes the best hemp brownies?
In this week's Munchie Monday, we cover all the basics of making the fantastic, fun, classic CBD hemp brownie.
Hemp brownies have been a popular edible choice for decades. For many people hemp or cannabis brownies are the first contact they have with edibles.
As the popularity of CBD use and hemp flower continues to rise, the need for edibles that work has arisen.
CBD edibles are one of the most popular requested wellness products on our site.
Quite frankly, one of the more popular reasons for choosing CBD edibles is because they are easy to dose and are absolutely delectable.
While more research needs to be done about the benefits of CBD, more and more of our customers have taken to dosing CBD edibles.
The downsides to choosing CBD edibles are numerous, from shady vendors to terrible tastes.
Little doubt remains in my mind that the reason CBD hemp brownies are so popular is because they are a familiar delight, easy to make, and chocolate pairs incredibly well with hemp's earthy taste.
Like a warm blanket straight from the dryer, there is nothing quite like the ooey-gooey, chocolatey, taste of a brownie right out of the oven.
I firmly believe that hemp brownies are the perfect place to start if you are new to cooking CBD or if you are looking for a recipe to springboard your CBD creativity.
How to Make Incredible CBD Brownies
Everyone has their own opinion on what makes a great tasting CBD hemp brownie.
Some folks insist that hemp brownies have icing, adding a layer of sweetness (and another way to add more CBD into your brownie), other's add peanut butter or other nut butters for added protein in this sweet treat.
If you aren't a chocolate lover you may prefer a blondie, and while I always include substitution options for vegan & other dietary limitations, my personal favorite CBD brownies have added mini marshmallows, a little whimsical touch I love.
The fact of the matter is this: to make great CBD brownies, you have to start with great ingredients, the most important one being great CBD!
After all, the gooey taste of a CBD brownie is only as good as its ability to deliver the benefits of CBD.
While in the past, edibles were a good way to use cannabis that tasted like dirt, I never advise you to cook with CBD, hemp or cannabis flower that is not high quality.
This classic CBD hemp brownie recipe is perfect for novices and pro's alike.
With a simple ingredient list, this basic CBD brownie bakes up in a flash, and can be frozen to eliminate food waste.
- 1 Cup Hemp Butter, Melted and Cooled
- 1 Cup Granulated White Sugar
- 1 Cup Packed Dark Brown Sugar
- 4 Large Eggs
- 1 Tablespoon Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
- 1 1/4 Cups Chocolate Chips, Divided
Step 1: Preheat oven to 300 F. Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line pan with parchment paper. This will make it easier to get the CBD brownies out of the pan after baking.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl stir together the Hemp butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and combined.
Step 3: Sift in flour and cocoa powder, add the salt. Fold in one cup of the chocolate chips, careful not to over mix the batter. Spread evenly into the pan and sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of chopped chocolate on top of the brownies.
- Step 4: Bake for 30-45 minutes on the middle rack in the oven until the brownies are just set to the touch. Your CBD Brownies will continue to cook as they cool, so be careful not to over-bake them. Store in an airtight container.
FAQ's When Making CBD Brownies
Do You Have to Use CBD Butter?
No. You do not have to use CBD butter. In fact, you could use CBD infused coconut oil, CBD infused chocolate, you could even just use your CBD tincture to make your CBD hemp brownies.
Can You Put Hemp Flower Right into the CBD Brownie batter?
This questions tends to divides the Hemp Community. Some people insist it is best to bake their hemp flower right into their CBD brownie batter.
So, yes, technically you can bake your Hemp Flower right into your Brownie Batter. That is if you want an uneven bake, no accuracy of CBD dosage per brownie, and you don't mind eating crunchy hemp flower in your brownie for little to no result.
For the best edible results you always have to decarboxylate your raw hemp flower before you cook with it.
Decarboxylation activates dried hemp flower to allow your body to reap the full benefits of activated CBD.
Raw hemp and cannabis flower contains hundreds of cannabinoids & acidic forms of cannabinoids.
Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) is converted into Cannabidiol (CBD) when heated.
Decarbing your CBD flower is simple in the oven.
Preheat your oven to 230 Fahrenheit.
Oven temperatures can fluctuate so if you are worried about your oven getting too hot, check the temperature with a oven thermometer. Or you could always reduce the temperature and increase the bake time, excuse the pun!
Grind your hemp flower into pieces, evenly spread it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and place it in the oven.
Let it heat in the oven for 30 to 45 minutes, checking occasionally to make sure the temperature is accurate & your flower isn't burning.
That's it. It is that simple to decarb your CBD hemp flower. For more instructions on decarboxylation, the science behind it, and infusing hemp butter click here.
How Do You Calculate the Dosage of Hemp Brownies?
To calculate the dosage of your hemp brownies you will need to calculate the total mg of CBD and divide it by the number of servings.
The total milligram of CBD in hemp flower can easily be found by accessing 3rd party lab results.
For example, say you have 14 grams of CBD flower with 12% of CBD. Which means that each gram of flower contains 120mg of CBD.
If you infuse 1 cup butter with that 14 grams you will have 1,680 mg of CBD in that single cup of butter or 35 mg of CBD per teaspoon (1 cup = 48 teaspoons).
If you use the entire cup of infused CBD butter in your CBD brownies, you divide 1,680mg of CBD by the number of brownies (say you only cut 12) 1,680mg CBD/12 servings equals 140mg of CBD per brownie.
That is a lot of CBD in one tiny hemp brownie!
When dosing edibles, please remember the rule of edibles: you can always eat more, you cannot eat less.
CBD edibles can take upwards of 2 hours to kick in. If you do not regularly use CBD or hemp products you should dose your edibles at 5 to 10 mg per serving.
Mixing It Up and Getting Decadent
Basic Hemp Brownies are a great place to start for someone who does not have a lot of experience cooking with CBD.
You can practice infusing butter or coconut oil with your hemp flower and bake brownies to your heart's content.
But what happens if you want something more than just a plain jane brownie?
We get a little creative!
One simple way I class up my CBD Brownies is to add icing.
Icing is a simple and great way to add CBD into your food too by simply mixing whatever CBD tincture you have into your icing.
You could also make icing with infused hemp butter, because a lot of from scratch recipes for icing call for butter.
Adding tiny extra details like CBD icing or CBD chocolates to your hemp brownie really elevates it to the next level.
It also increases the CBD, so just be sure you add in extra CBD in any other product you use into the final total of the CBD milligram per batch of edibles.
This Basic CBD Brownie is a great tasting staple to dress up, and the sky is truly the limit.
I love to toss in half a cup of mini-marshmallows. I also love swapping out the extra chocolate chips for fresh fruits like raspberries and blueberries.
For vegan brownies swap out the hemp butter for hemp infused coconut oil and swap the eggs for avocado or applesauce.
Avocado and applesauce are fantastic ways to make sure your brownies are moist and hold together, while omitting animal products.
However you choose to dress up your hemp brownies, I really hope you find them easy to make & delicious.
